VIDYA VOX TO PERFORM IN DURBAN

Durban — Indian American singer Vidya Vox is in Durban on the first stop in her Sundari Tour.

Vox has returned to South Africa after five years and will perform Saturday (tonight) at The Globe at Suncoast Casino. It will be the first time she will perform songs from her new album, Sundari.

The show runs from 8pm-11pm. Tickets from Computicket from R300 to R1500.

She will perform tomorrow at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg before heading to India.

She brings together influences of her Indian American heritage to create music that is a mix of Western pop, electronic dance music, Bollywood hits and Indian classical music.

Since launching her YouTube channel in 2015 with mash-ups of Western pop hits and music from her native India, Vox has amassed more than a billion views and over 7 million subscribers.

She was born in Chennai in India, grew up in Virginia in the US, and is based in Los Angeles.

Vox said she loved South Africa.

“It is one of the best audiences to perform for and connect with everyone there. It’s also such a beautiful place. It is the place where I always start all my tours, so it’s also my good luck place,” said Vox.

During a previous visit to the country she said she loved nature and visited some cool markets.

“The people are so warm and welcoming, it feels like a mini homecoming to return to South Africa.”

Vox is accompanied by her partner Shankar Tucker, who plays keyboard, as well as members of her band, Brandon Bae and Efa Etaroma.

She said one of the things on her to-do list was eating a bunny chow.

Vox said fans attending her concert can expect to hear new music, her old favourites and some Bollywood music.

“I’m so nervous and excited. My latest album, Sundari, was inspired by my mom, and is an ode to my matriarchal family. It is about the resilience and bravery my mom had to summon to leave a violent home situation with my sister and I. Every instrument, every melody and lyric is very intentional and took me over three years to write and create,” she said.
